2009 Outlook: Bust (overvalued)

Alex Smith should thank his stars that someone in San Francisco thought he deserved one last chance. Certainly, few fans or members of the media felt that way. By all accounts, Mike Singletary didn't feel that way either. Coach would have been happy with overachieving Shaun Hill at the helm, but Smith is GM Scott McCloughan's pet project. The former Utah pivot, who restructured his contract this year to lessen what would have been an obscene $12.3-million cap hit, still has the arm strength to impress in training camp. The question is whether or not he can win. If his NFL career so far is any indication (career record of 11-21), fantasy owners shouldn't hold their breath.
