2009 Outlook: Gamble (high risk)

Fantasy football is all about touchdowns. In 2007 Braylon Edwards caught 16 touchdown passes and instantly became a fantasy superstar. In 2008 that number was reduced to three. At the least Edwards will get 800 or 900 receiving yards, but will he get his touchdowns this year or will 2009 look more like 2008? The answer lies with the quarterbacks. Derek Anderson had a poor campaign in 2008 and Brady Quinn is still a relatively unproven prospect. Edwards is the top receiver on a team that has the potential to have a very potent passing attack. If Quinn shows up and starts heaving the ball down field, Edwards will have a great year. But if the Browns offense looks like it did last year, Edwards should certainly not be any fantasy team's top receiver or possibly even their second receiver.

8/19 Update: Edwards had a very disappointing season in 2008, at least compared to his great year in 2007. So far it seems like Edwards is more like he was last year than the previous year. Edwards failed to catch a pass in Cleveland's preseason opener and dropped what would have been a touchdown reception from Quinn in the second quarter. It was dropped passes, with a little help from inconsistent quarterback play, that made Edwards' 2008 season so disappointing and so far it looks like more of the same in 2009.

Month Position Franchise/Comments
May 4.02 FFToolbox.com - It is hard to feel comfortable with only one RB after four rounds, but I can quibble about the best remaining options, though Grant/McFadden are tempting. Plus, with all the two-back systems these days, I think I can cobble together decent options later on. Edwards may not reach his stellar '07 levels, but I'm going with the theory that after being majorly embarrassed following all the drops and trade talk, he has much to prove. In addition, whom else do the Browns have to throw too?
June 4.10 FantasySharks.com - A contract year, familiarity with the QB's and driven to show 2007 was more the norm than the fluke, Edwards has a decent shot at rebounding. The Browns will be throwing the ball and he'll be the main target.
July 5.12 FansFantasyFootball.com - Hoping he bounces back and avoids the drops...huge upside and the only option in the passing game in Cleveland
Aug. 5.01 FansFantasyFootball.com - Ok Marshall and Edwards may be on the all bust team...but also full of potential
