2009 Outlook: Stud (low risk)

One year ago it was really risky to pick up Aaron Rodgers for your fantasy team. Those risks are nearly gone. Rodgers threw for over 4,000 yards during his first year as a starter. He has a ton of receiving threats (including Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, Jordy Nelson, James Jones and Donald Lee) and Rodgers should reach the 300 yard mark more often than not this season. The fact that his line is only getting better should reduce the amount of sacks and his experience should also decrease his interception numbers. Those might be high expectations, but the circus is over in Green Bay and now it is time for everybody to forget about Brett Favre and that means Rodgers can simply play football…and he showed last year that he can play very well.

8/2 Update: Rodgers opened up camp quietly since the Brett Favre saga appears to be over, at least for now. The quarterback appears to be calm and confident and the lack of a media circus has made things much easier to deal with this time around. With an entirely healthy offense heading into the preseason, things are looking very promising for Rodgers and his fantasy owners.

June 4.07 Rotoworld.com - Pick made based on Pre-Draft List
July 4.02 FFToday.com - Here is where I try to make up not taking Greg Jennings earlier (2.02) even though I'm very bullish on the Packers offense. Check the receivers Rodgers has to work with - Jennings, Donald Driver, James Jones and Jordy Nelson, plus a new TE in Jermichael Finley creating some buzz. It is often those 3rd, 4th and 5th receiving options who, while not studs by any stretch, are very good allowing the QB to spread the ball around and vault from good to great fantasy status. Not to mention Jennings is on the cusp of stud-dom. Ryan Grant comes back healthy. This is only Rodgers' second year as the starter and he impressed me right out of the gate last year. After riding pine for 3 years behind Mr. Favre, you know he must have soaked in a ton of experience in 2008, which puts him in prime position for a great 2009.
