QB Jason Campbell, WAS

2009 Outlook: Bye Week Fill-in
The unwanted quarterback. Campbell was in the news throughout the offseason because of the Redskins' infatuation with acquiring other signal callers (specifically Jay Cutler and Mark Sanchez), leading many to wonder if the relationship between the QB and the organization is forever damaged. The former Auburn star will remain the Redskins' starter, but it could be his last in Washington as Campbell enters the final year of his contract. Ironically, after leading the Redskins to a 6-2 record last year some were mentioning him in league MVP discussions, though that buzz quickly evaporated (as did the Redskins' playoff hopes -- in part because of the lack of production in the passing game). Though hardly a fantasy star, Campbell passed for a solid 3,245 yards, completed 62 percent of his passes and threw only six picks; perhaps he was too cautious as his 13 TD passes and his paltry 6.4 yards per attempt would infer. He possess a strong arm and throws a deep ball as well as any of the top passers, but Campbell's long, slow release is not an ideal fit for the West Coast offense and with the smallish receivers he has to work with. Still, the early talk out of training camp is encouraging and an increase in production in year two of the Jim Zorn offense is likely. Campbell is not in danger of losing his job to ancient backup Todd Collins or former Hawaii star Colt Brennan, though those two could see time if the Redskins' leaky offensive line does not stay healthy and Campbell's body pays the price. In the end, Campbell is unlikely to be more than a rotational fantasy option yet again and probably a mid-level QB2 option, though that could change if/when he finds a new address for the '10 season.

SportsGrumblings.com - Was really hoping that Eli Manning would fall to me here, but he was nabbed a few slot ahead of this pick. No problem, because as a backup, Campbell is more than adequate. |

KFFL.com - Went with the upside for my backup signal caller. Campbell should be comfortable in his second year in an offensive system. He protects the football and is shifty enough under pressure. The 'Skins should pass more to take some weight off Clinton Portis' shoulders. |

KFFL.com - I felt this one was a need. It's early for his ADP, but we have Campbell ranked highly this year, and I don't want to be stuck with Shaun Hill/Tarvaris Jackson/Marc Bulger as my backup. Campbell should benefit working in the same offense for the second straight year. He has a solid rushing attack to take pressure off of him and a decent receiving corps that could improve if last year's draft picks can stay healthy and contribute. |
