2009 Outlook: Fantasy Handcuff

I hate to call Sproles a handcuff, but he is until LT gets hurt or is unproductive. This is just the reality for a player who is on any team with a star running back. I sincerely hope Sproles has a chance to spell LT more this season and consequently both backs will stay healthy and productive, but LT will likely demand carries and a chance to regain his composure following an injury plagued season with lower than expected numbers. Sproles had 1 rushing touchdown and 5 reception touchdowns last season replacing LT and showcased his abilities when provided the opportunity. Sproles is speedy and has great hands. Look for him to capitalize on the chances he gets on the field. he is another Michael "the burner" Turner and will eventually see his heyday, but until then wait and watch patiently.

2009 Mock Draft Results

Month Position Franchise/Comments
May 8.12 FantasySharks.com - Sproles was a dynamo last year, going wild in the playoffs and when spelling LaDainian Tomlinson hit a lot of home runs. If LT falters then Sproles will get even more touches but the Chargers will run them as a 1-2 punch and Sproles should see the field a lot.
June 9.10 CBSSports.com - The Chargers should use him quite a bit to make him a solid No. 4 RB on my roster.
July 10.03 KFFL.com - I'm not a huge fan of Sproles anytime earlier than this round. However, he fell to me, and with LT already on my roster, it was the right time to handcuff him. Sproles showed in a small sample size last year that he can be a solid contributor when Tomlinson is out. Even if LT is healthy, they should still make good use of Sproles, especially in the receiving game.
Aug. 9.02 KFFL.com - If LT goes down or disappoints, Sproles' touches increase. The stout shorty won't be the lone beneficiary, but even as a part-timer he's dynamic enough to put up the occasional big game and outscore one of my top three.
