2014 Outlook: Bye Week Fill-inLast updated on Jun-23-2014 by Rob Warner
Cassel was signed to a two-year, $10 million contract this offseason. Over nine games in 2013, the 31-year-old had a 60-percent completion percentage and mediocre TD:INT ratio of 11:9 while averaging 201 YPG in Minnesota's run heavy offense. With Cassel's knowledge of the offense, all signs point to him as the likely starter for the first month of the season. However, Bridgewater could be given a shot sooner than many expect based on his experience in a a pro-style system. Minnesota will look to diversify their offense to keep AP fresh and whichever QB is under center will benefit from playing behind a solid O-line ranked sixth overall by Pro Football Focus.
Certainly, Adrian Peterson has no problem with carrying the rock whenever his name is called. He's done it about 300 times for seven years, even when defenses knew full well what was coming. However, with playmakers such as Cordarrelle Patterson and Greg Jennings on the outside and with aggressive play-caller Norv Turner designing things, Peterson thinks the 2014 Vikings will be very difficult to defend.
"Let's call it what it is: I thought in the past, we've been predictable," Peterson told reporters Monday. "I'm sure you guys wrote stories about us being predictable the past seven years. You won't be able to write that story this year. That's pretty much all I'm saying. You won't be able to do that, because this offense is so versatile."
The Vikings will still be a run-first offense, but it's clear they have a lot more talent on that side of the ball than in years past. With Patterson, Jennings, tight end Kyle Rudolph, defenses can't really sell out to stop Peterson. However, quarterback competency will play a big role in that, so the hope is Matt Cassel and/or Teddy Bridgewater can perform well enough to stop defenses from putting eight and nine men in the box, all of them focused on the former MVP. Gone are the days when the Vikings had to give a lot of starts to the likes of Bernard Berrian, Michael Jenkins, Jerome Simpson, or Visanthe Shiancoe. Peterson has seen plenty of those days and is excited to move on.
