2009 Outlook: Stud (low risk)

Former Memphis standout DeAngelo Williams (Carolina's 1st round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft 27th overall), had shown flashes of potential and big play ability in his first two seasons in the league, but had done little to distinguish himself as the feature back Carolina envisioned him to be when he was drafted. The Panthers' selection of Oregon RB Jonathan Stewart (1st round 13th overall) last season lit a fire under DeAngelo Williams who responded by winning the position battle for the starting job out of training camp, and turning in one of the top fantasy seasons by any RB in 2008. Williams ran for 1,515 yards and 18 touchdowns on 273 carries, also catching 22 passes for 121 yards and 2 TD's. Another amazing statistic is that Williams didn't fumble once in 2008! Williams finished 3rd overall in the league in rushing in 2008, and led all RB's in TD's in his amazing 2008 breakout season. Williams is slated to hit free agency next offseason, and will earn a max contract if he produces at the same level as last season in 2009. Williams is the engine that runs the entire Carolina offense, and aside from Steve Smith is the offenses most dynamic weapon, who has evolved into the hard nosed runner that John Fox covets in his scheme. Williams will see the lions share of carries in Carolina's RBBC system that will also feature Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson in 2009.

Fantasy owners drafting Williams in the 1st round of 2009 drafts should expect 1,400 yards and 14 TDs this season if the offensive line stays healthy and intact.

Update 8/21

Williams recorded 29 yards on 6 carries Monday Night versus the Giants. Williams looked strong in Carolina's first pre-season action, unlike the rest of the offense. The absence of Jonathan Stewart means that Williams will continue to see all of the first team reps in exhibition games.

2009 Mock Draft Results

Month Position Franchise/Comments
May 1.10 SportsGrumblings.com - At #10 overall, Williams presents good risk./reward ratio.
June 1.12 ThunderingBlurb.com - I may have my doubts about Williams repeating last year's numbers but that doesn't mean 1) I don;t believe he will be a top 10 back or 2) I'm not pleased to get him at 12. Great value here in my opinion. I had planned a particular strategy but I'm changing on the fly and grabbing value - which is always important.
July 1.12 FansFantasyFootball.com - No one had a better end to the 2008 season then Williams...Stewart scares me alittle but at 12th he is great value...
