2009 Outlook: Fantasy Handcuff

Both Leon and Thomas Jones are unhappy with their current contracts. When the news hit that the Jets would be concentrating on running the ball better this season, both backs expressed their unhappiness. Washington is in the final year of his rookie contract and if the Jets fail to renegotiate with him he will become an unrestricted free agent at the close of this season -- this could be good and bad news. The good news is Leon will play hard all season in hopes to showcase his talents to other suitors. If you're a Jets fan this is bad news because if it got this far it means Leon won't be returning to New York. If I were a betting man I'd put money on the Jets putting together a new deal with Washington. Leon is an intricate piece to the Jets offense whether running or receiving and a valuable special teams man. If Jones doesn't get a new contract, Washington could be a valuable asset to fantasy owners this season. Should Jones sign a new deal, the two will likely split time in the backfield (which will downgrade both players).

2009 Mock Draft Results

Month Position Franchise/Comments
May 7.07 ThunderingBlurb.com - With Rex Ryan focusing on the run, Washington will get far more work than he did in Mangini's 'wait I have a run game?' offense in 2008. He's also very dangerous catching the ball on short routes and screens so in a PPR, I like what he can do for me. I expect the contract issue to be dealt with this summer, so I'm comfortable he'll be in camp and playing well come August.
June 10.06 TheHuddle.com - Washington offers the best value on the board at this juncture, so depth at other positions will have to wait another round.
July 8.05 TheHuddle.com - Leon will be the Jets' pass-catching back regardless of whether or not it's Jones or Greene getting the primary carries. Any return game scores would be a bonus.
Aug. 7.08 ThunderingBlurb.com - As he showed against the Ravens D (sure it was preseason but still) Leon Washington is a guy who will compile yards any which way he can. He's also a breakout play waiting to happen and in Best Ball, all I need is those big plays. LW isn't going to run between the tackles like his counterparts Mssrs Jones and Greene but the Jets realized their mistake from 2008 - the man was criminally underused. No more.
