2009 Outlook: Bye Week Fill-in

Some upgrades to the O-line and new receiving options may give JaMarcus Russell the chance to improve on a quiet, but not terrible 2008 season. Tom Cable and the Raiders have suggested they want to throw the ball deep more often this year. New addition Darrius Heyward-Bey figures to help in that department, but it'll take more than a speedy (if inconsistent) rookie wideout to turn around this passing offense. Russell threw for 180 yards or less in 10 of his 15 games last season and only once completed more than 20 passes in a game. Oakland brass may talk about putting the keys to the offense in his hands, but I'll believe it when I see it. Russell needs to show significant improvement this season before he's worth real consideration in fantasy drafts. Asking him to heave up more long bombs is not the way to jump start his development into a reliable QB.
