2009 Outlook: Stud (low risk)

Calvin Johnson had a big sophomore campaign, catching 78 passes for 1,331 yards and 12 touchdowns. That was with a mess at the quarterback position. That mess might not be quite sorted out, but Matthew Stafford (the first overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft) could clear up that situation pretty quickly. Traditionally it is the third year when a receiver really finds his stride in the NFL. Johnson may not be able to do much better in 2009 than he did in 2008, but that should still make him a top ten receiver in any fantasy league. If Stafford can turn into a Matt Ryan type of player, it is Johnson who will benefit. If, somehow, the Lions offense turns into something good, Johnson could be in for a huge year.

8/8 Update: There is still hope that the Lions' offense will emerge as a quality, cohesive unit. The general upgrade in talent is certainly there and Johnson should benefit from that. Sure Bryant Johnson may take a few catches away, but Calvin Johnson is obviously the better receiver and no matter who the quarterback is, Calvin will be the main target.

May 2.01 FantasyFootballTrader.com - The thought of pairing this format's '08 #1 WR with '08's #1 QB was tempting. But 7 of the top 10 scorer's were QB last year, so it's a slow, gentle dropoff there. With only Fitz off the board I can't pass up Johnson & Johnson as my starting two. Not even sweating RB because with 10 already off the board only 7-10 more will be selected by the time I next pick.
June 2.01 ThunderingBlurb.com - Normally I don't even think twice goign with Megatron here - but the PPR aspect worries me. We all saw what CJ could do with just a pass - but 'just a pass' is risky. Still I think with Pettigrew at TE, a few decent though not wondrous WRS around him, Calvin Johnson could see enough action. It's riskier than it appears at first, but CJ has too much upside to ignore.
July 2.02 FFToday.com - Okee-dokee, I did not expect Calvin to make it back to me. I was ready to go off the reservation with a non-consensus pick which would surely put me at the bottom of MFL's draft recap ratings, but my other guy is a dwarf next to CJ's 6'5" 235 lbs. Yep, I've got to take him.
