QB Trent Edwards, BUF

2009 Outlook: Quality Backup
As a rookie in 2007, Trent Edwards completed 56 percent of his passes for 1,630 yards and seven touchdowns. However, his eight interceptions were a big problem. Edwards grew during his sophomore season, completing 66 percent of his passes. He also threw more touchdowns than interceptions, so that is a good sign. Year three should be even better than year two when Edwards was nothing more than a bye week fill-in on most fantasy rosters. The big difference this year is the addition of Terrell Owens. Edwards and Lee Evans desperately needed another wide receiver to keep the pressure off and Owens will be that guy. Edwards is the biggest question mark in a very talented offense and if he can keep the chains moving without making mistakes, he will put up some pretty solid numbers.
8/16 Update: It took a mere two games for Edwards to begin to really like the Bills' new hurry-up offense. In the game against the Bears, Edwards completed all ten of his passes. The first preseason game did not go as well, but under this system every game is going to get better; when the season starts Edwards will be ready to put up some big numbers.

RapidDraft.com - Brady owners learned last year that a decent fantasy backup is imperative, no matter how durable your starter has been to date. I could go into Edwards' breakout potential at length, but instead I'll just advise that you take a look at the numbers for Donovan McNabb and Tony Romo in their first seasons of throwing to T.O. |

FantasyFootballTrader.com - I'd like to see the Bills begin giving him a little more rope. And the fact that they are installing some no huddle for the former Stanford grad is a tell that they'll be doing exactly that. Most don't realize that only 8 QB's had a higher completion % than Edwards last year. With addition of Owens, I wouldn't be surprised if he takes a giant step forward this year. |

RapidDraft.com - QB board is getting thin, but my favorite sleeper at the position happens to welcome the Browns to town during Drew Brees' Week 5 bye. |
