2013 Outlook: Quality Backup

Last updated on Jun-24-2013 by Ben Standig

Keep arguing if you want about whether the Ravens' quarterback is elite, though it seems like Flacco's Super Bowl win and career playoff record largely ended that debate. As for those who imagine him as fantasy gold now that Baltimore's No. 5 hoisted the Lombardi Trophy, get ready for some pushback. Whatever happens to flip the switch with Flacco's stat line in the postseason does not exist consistently during Weeks 1-17. He's certainly viable and even potent depending on the matchup (Flacco threw for a career-high 3,817 yards) including five 300-yard games with 22 touchdowns). Of course, he also tossed for less than 200 yards six times and has still never thrown for more than 25 touchdowns in a single season. Factor in no obvious replacement for Anquan Boldin and it is hard imagining anything different overall for Flacco in 2013. That's not a bad thing as long as he's drafted in the middle off the QB2 range and not with the idea of him leading you to a fantasy Super Bowl.

2013 FFToolbox Staff Mock Draft #1

15.11 FFToolbox - Rob Warner - Flacco's stats over Baltimore's final eight games: 138-of-231 passing (60 percent) for 1,919 yards (8.31 YPA), 18 touchdowns, and two INTS. He finished the season as the Super Bowl MVP and parlayed his production in a $121 million contract. The loss of Boldin could hurt slightly but Torrey Smith , Dennis Pitta and solid receiving skills of Ray Rice make me Wacco for Flacco as a solid QB2.

17.05 FFToolbox -Scott - I have Peyton, so I just need a bye week guy and Flacco is fine insurance in the event the unspeakable happens to Peyton. Expect Flacco to have to throw more due to the defense taking major steps backwards this season.
2013 FFToolbox Expert Mock Draft #3

16.08 TheHuddle - Flacco doesn't have to be a great QB for fantasy purposes, just serviceable. Waiting until round 16 for your 1st QB isn't and easy thing for many to do, but I've got some research that proves it's the prudent move. Once I release the article later this summer you'll see what I mean. Oh, and I should point out that I am VERY happy with Flacco as my QB1.
