2013 Outlook: Gamble (high risk)

Last updated on Aug-16-2013 by Ben Standig

Have you heard the one about DeSean Jackson as a home run threat who strikes out about as much he goes yard? What about him as a combustible option that seemingly loses focus on the field more often than a far-sighted camera operator with their glasses? Sadly both versions have proven true, including last season when he finished with 45 receptions for 700 yards and two touchdowns. The numbers were down in part due to Jackson missing five games and landing on the IR with fractured ribs. Of course, the previous season when he played 15 games, the shifty one only scored four times and finished under 1,000 receiving yards. Here's the good news: just about everyone outside of the Jackson household has doubts, meaning he's likely to be drafted outside the WR2 range. As a third receiver and in this potentially high scoring offense, that's not a bad gamble to consider (especially in non-PPR leagues). When he's at full blast, Jackson is one the scariest playmakers in the league. Still, put all the factors together - including a new offense - and Jackson is indeed a gamble.

2013 FFToolbox Staff Mock Draft #1

7.11 FFToolbox - Rob Warner - Chip Kelly's fast past offense figures to be just what the doctor ordered to rejuvenate D-Jax's career after he a rib injury ended his season after just 11 disappointing games (45 catches for 700 yards and two touchdowns). Kelly has vowed to use D-Jax speed more by using him in the rushing game - not an ideal scenario for avoiding injury.

7.11 World Fantasy Rankings #4 - This is my wildcard pick. In the past, I have always preferred taking Maclin in a later round than Jackson because he offered more value. Not this season. The Eagles will have a ton of offensive snaps this year which means more opportunities for D-Jax and I like how Chip Kelly uses his weapons. At Oregon, Kelly was able to get his weapons the ball in space to let them make plays and that will continue in the NFL. I like Djax regardless if it is Vick or Foles at QB but I hope they do not have him return punts.

7.10 FootballDiehards - Was totally hoping Tavon Austin would reach me here, but I'll settle for the older version. ... Once considered one of the league's most dangerous offensive weapons, Jackson's productivity hasn't matched his special talent for more than two seasons. The hope here is that Chip Kelly can figure out how to tap back into Jackson's big-play ability.
