2014 Outlook: Bust (overvalued)

Last updated on Jul-04-2014 by Mark Morales-Smith

After missing just about all of 2013 due to a toe injury, Jonathan Stewart is reportedly the healthiest he has been since 2011. He must now prove he can stay healthy over a 16-game season. Stewart has been the "two" in a one-two punch combination with DeAngelo Willliams. The backfield is a little more crowded now though. Even if healthy, his rushing yards will be limited by the presence of Williams, Mike Tolbert, Cam Newton and perhaps the occasional carry from Kenjon Barner. Stewart does add some PPR value because he is the Panthers' best pass-catcher out of the backfield. Don't expect many TDs since the Panthers prefer to use Tolbert and Newton from up close. Stewart has limited value across all formats.

Latest Update

Jul-26-14 Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart not concerned about his hamstring

Jonathan Stewart told reporters at Saturday's training camp, "It's definitely frustrating, but it's nothing that I'm really too concerned about considering my past and my history with my ankles." The 27 year old running back hasn't played 16 games in a season since 2011. Stewart says it's frustrating and the only thing he wants to do is contribute. The Panther's running back feels as though recovering from the torn hamstring injury won't be problem. Stewart is expected to miss 2-4 weeks, but will be back for the regular season.

Fantasy Analysis:

Stewart hasn't been a relevant fantasy running back since the 2011 season. An accumulation of injuries and the sharing of touches with DeAngelo Williams in the backfield does not bode well for Stewart. Some may see Stewart as a decent change-of-pace back when he's healthy, but he should only be considered in deeper leagues. With the new re-worked offensive line and the lack of passing options for Cam Newton, the Panther's running game may suffer dramatically. If you're considered a Panthers running back, think again.
