2009 Outlook: Solid/Safe Pick

Kevin Smith rushed for 976 yards and eight touchdowns last season and those numbers could increase dramatically if the Lions' offense can turn it around. The Lions picked up quarterback Matthew Stafford and tight end Brandon Pettigrew to spice up the passing attack, but it may take some time before Stafford turns the Detroit air game into something halfway decent. In the meantime, it will be up to Smith to carry the offense. That will be tough to do considering the Lions were 30th in the nation in rushing offense last year and did little to upgrade their offensive line during the offseason. Smith might run for 1,000 yards and reach the end zone ten times, but that is not enough to make him a top running back for most teams in most fantasy leagues.

8/8 Update: The Lions coaching staff has been impressed with Smith so far during camp, but fellow running backs Maurice Morris and Aveion Cason have not looked too shabby either. What that means is that Morris and Cason could take away some carries from Smith. However, Smith is still the obvious top back on this team and, as the Lions always say, they want to establish the ground game as much as possible.

2009 Mock Draft Results

Month Position Franchise/Comments
May 3.05 FansFantasyFootball.com - So was hoping Welker or Boldin would drop here but no dice. Considered a QB but too early...so with injury concerns at RB I will take my 3rd RB and worry about WR and QB soon...
June 3.08 FantasyFootballTrader.com - If his December touches were a trend, he's a top 10 back. Regardless, I compare Smith favorably to the majority of #2 RB's.
July 3.12 FansFantasyFootball.com - Love Smith this year and especially as a number 2 runningback...I expect 50 catches...
Aug. 3.08 ThunderingBlurb.com - Once Smith got comfortable, he had a very nice rookie season, especially on an awful 0-16 Lions team where he should have been relegated to a fantasy afterthought. Instead he had some of his most effective Fantasy games during your fantasy playoffs. Another year under his belt, a better QB (I count CPepp as better since now he's had time to 'get' the offense and Stafford is well, Stafford) a TE who can block in Pettigrew and still has Calvin Johnson aka Megatron as a long ball threat. Lots to like about Smith this year, happy to pair him with Williams. Plus I like his movies. Wait, what? He isn't THAT Smith? Huh - I wondered how he lost so much weight.
