2009 Outlook: Solid/Safe Pick

At the beginning of last season the running back position was up for grabs in Houston. Fantasy owners didn't know if Ahman Green, Chris Brown or Steve Slaton would be the workhorse back. Many believed that Green and Brown would split most of the carries and the rookie Slaton would be a change of pace back. The thought was Slaton is too small to be the team's primary back. As luck would have it for Steve both Green and Brown got injured again and he was able to show us what he could do. Sixteen games later with 268 rushing attempts and 1282 yards under his belt all the questions about his durability were answered. This year it appears Slaton will be the primary back in Houston and Brown will be the change of pace guy. If this is the case, there is no reason for us to believe Slaton won't repeat his rookie year performance.

2009 Mock Draft Results

Month Position Franchise/Comments
May 2.05 Rotoworld.com - The receiver run was the reason Slaton fell here, but I'm still surprised he's available in this format. Running backs that can catch are at a premium in PPR and Slaton appears to have little serious competition for carries. While expecting double-digit touchdowns might be too bold because Slaton isn't proficient in short-yardage/goal-line situations, he's easily a top-ten PPR value in a top-five offense with a Reggie Bush-like skill set.
June 1.10 CBSSports.com - We all know the draft class was great for running backs last year, and Slaton was second-best only to Matt Forte. He will get all the touches in a great offense, and he's the best value on the board at this spot.
July 2.03 KFFL.com - In his rookie year, Slaton ran for 1,282 yards on 268 carries (4.8 yards per carry) while catching 50 passes for 377 yards. He also found the end zone 10 times - not too bad for his first year in the league. Who's his competition? Ryan Moats? I don't see anyone taking carries from Slaton. The passing offense should also keep defenses honest. Like with LT, I'm happy Slaton fell to me here.
