2014 Outlook: Quality Backup

Last updated on Jul-10-2014 by Brad Kruse

Since Cook came into the league, we've all been very impressed with his possibilities as a fantasy sleeper. He plays more like a wide receiver than a tight end. Tennessee could never include him enough. Last year (his first with St. Louis), he had a career high in targets, catches and touchdowns; however, that was only 51 receptions for 671 yards and five touchdowns. These are sufficient TE2 numbers and little else.

In Week 1 last year, Cook teased us all with 10 targets that resulted in seven receptions for 141 yards and two touchdowns. The performance turned out to be fool's gold. If you look at how Cook played with Sam Bradford, the numbers aren't too different than his career marks. Cook remains a TE2 candidate with upside, but that's been the book on Cook for years

8.05 FFToolbox - Brian Murphy - I was very annoyed that Miles Austin was taken one spot ahead of me here. I settled for Cook because we are able to start two tight ends in this league, and because I didn't really like any of the running backs in this area. We know Cook has plenty of potential, but now he is part of a team with a coaching staff that actually wants to unlock it. Cook could be Sam Bradford's top target, and it wouldn't shock me if he finishes the year inside the top seven in fantasy points among tight ends.

8.06 The Huddle - Missed on Jason Witten, missed on Vernon Davis, and Kyle Rudolph gets sniped right before I pick? Ouch, babe. I'm no big fan of Cook, but his projections make him an upside pick here and the position is thinning rapidly.

9.05 FFToolbox -Scott - Rave reviews coming out of St Louis about Cook and the role he'll have in the offense. Let's see if he can put together a solid season. Considered others but the questions surrounding the Rams wide receivers make me believe he's ready for a true breakout season.

10.04 World Ranked #20 - Too many talented TE's still on the board. We should have taken R.Randle as we thought we'd get him at 11.8 however missed out. That being said love the upside of cook. Coach Fisher hand picked him and paid him good money and has been known to produce solid TEs in his system (Bo Scaife was actually relevant with him!) Thinking this will be the year his production matches his potential.
