2014 Outlook: Bust (overvalued)

Last updated on Jul-08-2014 by Daniel Kalles

Brandon LaFell was brought in from the Carolina Panthers, and like most free agent receivers brought in, it will take time for LaFell to understand New England's complicated schemes (which is why many receivers have trouble in their first year in New England and often don't make it). LaFell has plenty of time to get in sync with Brady, working out of every receiver spot. He will also get some looks at replacing Aaron Hernandez's old spot in the offense. It is hard to peg where LaFell will fit in, we are going to have to keep an eye out for him during training camp. LaFell couldn't hack it as a No. 2 receiver in Carolina, so it's tough to imagine him putting it together buried on the Pats' depth chart.

Month Position Franchise/Comments
2013 FFToolbox Staff Mock Draft #1
June 18th, 2013
13.01 FFToolbox - Jeb Gorham - LaFell did not produce as much as I would have liked last season, but I think his numbers will jump this year. I am looking for 850-900 receiving yards and several more TDs than his 4 last season. I think he has fantasy value and might be a sleeper pick in some drafts depending upon who is in your league.
2013 FFToolbox Expert Mock Draft #2
July 2nd 2013
14.06 The Huddle - LaFell was solid last season, and with tight end whisperer Rob Chudzinski no longer calling plays in Carolina I expect Greg Olsen's numbers to dwindle. Steve Smith is already maxed out, which means LaFell's production should be even better in 2013--enough to make him a decent weekly flex option in this format.
2013 FFToolbox Expert Mock Draft #1
June 25th, 2013
12.11 CBSSports - He's still the No. 2 receiver for Cam Newton, and he flashed some signs of potential last year before getting hurt. He's marginal talent, but he's in an exceptional spot.
2013 FFToolbox Expert Mock Draft #3
July 9th, 2013
14.05 DraftSharks - Sometimes you just have to take the guy at the top of your draft list. LaFell improved his receptions per game and TDs last year despite missing 2 weeks. He might have to beat out Domenik Hixon to keep a starting job, but opportunity and a good QB await.
