2014 Outlook: Solid/Safe Pick

Last updated on Jul-02-2014 by Rob Warner

This 29-year-old is coming off an injury-plagued 2013 season (hip surgery) that limited him to just 20 catches for 169 yards over four games. Provided he doesn't suffer any setbacks, he's a player to target thanks to being a Flacco favorite in the red zone. Also, new OC Gary Kubiak's system loves tight ends and will maximize his talents. Just look at the numbers put up year-to-year by Owen Daniels in Houston (averaged 62 catches per season during his four years in Houston where he played at least 15 games). In 2012, Pitta had his best season: hauling in 61 receptions for 669 yards and seven touchdowns (finished as the seventh best fantasy TE in standard leagues). He should be a better target in PPR leagues, but remains a solid TE1 in standard formats as well (despite the presence of Daniels, who will make for a great second TE). Pitta will likely finish as the second-leading Ravens pass-catcher to Torrey Smith.

Editor's note: Pitta's ADP (TE8, 90.61) is right where it should be. This means you could draft three RBs, three WRs, a QB and then a TE like Pitta in Round 8. Nothing wrong at all with a roster like that after eight rounds. He could be a Top 5 TE and therefore outperform his draft stock; however, the Ravens must prove they can pass-protect again and operate more competently offensively.

9.01 FFToolbox - Jeb Gorham - I waited on the TE position as the big names went earlier. Pitta has solidified his value as the stop gap for Flacco and seems to end up with the ball more often than not. I like his play-making ability and think he was a solid 9th rounder.

6.02 BFD Fantasy - The #1 look for the Ravens on every pass play. In a PPR league he's going to finally break out and score TDs along with creating receptions.

8.01 Bruno Boys - This draft presented an interesting new perspective on drafting a tight end. It?s extremely rare that I don?t end up with Graham, Witten or Gronk on my team but it happened that way here. Pitta is the next best option now that he is the most reliable option left in Baltimore. On a per route run basis Pitta was elite last season. His main fantasy impediment was Boldin who split time with him in the slot, where he was most productive. Now that Boldin is gone, Pitta will run far more routes and be in the slot more regularly. He?ll easily eclipse his numbers last season and is stupid good value in the 8th. I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up my team?s best pick of the draft.

9.05 TheHuddle - Really like Pitta this year, think he finishes as a top-5 TE. As much as I like him I really wanted to go WR or RB but nothing really caught my eye. Liked Woodhead but thought he would be there with my next pick which is why I went with Pitta. Had I known Woodhead would have gone at 9.10 he'd have been my pick here.
