Rams' Mark Clayton says surgically repaired knee feels 'wonderful'
It looked like Mark Clayton had everyone fooled after a rather productive 2006 season. Since then, he had been nothing but a bust in Baltimore. He was traded to St. Louis before the 2010 season, but with a rookie at quarterback, not much was thought of the move.
Then Clayton became the team's clear No. 1 wideout and played like it. He caught a career-high 10 passes for 119 yards in week one, scored twice in week two and posted at least 70 receiving yards each in weeks three and four. His sudden relevance among the fantasy community ended just as quickly when Clayton tore the patellar tendon in his right knee in week five.
Clayton is now on the comeback trail and recently told the Tulsa World that his knee feels 'wonderful.' Clayton said he would like to keep playing for the Rams, but as a free agent, all he can do right now is hope.
"I would love to stay," Clayton said. "I love playing with Sam (Bradford). The organization is great. [Steve Spagnuolo], I love him. I love his passion."
Fantasy Analysis:
It was clear that Clayton and Bradford had some real chemistry on the field prior to the season-ending injury. Maybe they can rekindle that in 2011, but the Rams brought in two similar possession receivers through the draft -- Austin Pettis and Greg Salas. People in the know say those rookies are near locks to make the roster. Mix in Danny Amendola, Donnie Avery and Danario Alexander, and it's hard to project where Clayton fits in the picture. Keep him on your radar with the hopes of an early 2010 repeat, but don't be surprised if Clayton fails to meet your expectations yet again.
