T.J. Houshmandzadeh ready to 'shock' disbelievers
NFL wide receivers, more than those at any other position in the league, seemingly live on a never-ending supply of supreme self-confidence. Case in point: T.J. Houshmandzadeh. The 34-year-old wideout is coming off of back-to-back disappointing seasons, first with Seattle in 2009 and then Baltimore in 2010. His nomadic NFL adventure will continue this year, he just doesn't know where. But Houshmandzadeh said recently that he is ready for a big rebound.
"The last two years have been the most disappointing years I've had," Houshmandzadeh told the Carroll County Times. "I know people will say I can't play no more. If I get to the right team, I'll shock a lot of people.
"I'm so eager to show people what I can do because I feel really good right now. Last year at this time, I was rehabbing from my fourth hernia surgery and I was trying to manage the hernia. Now, I'm able to really work out and do explosive things."
Houshmandzadeh attributed to his lack of production in Baltimore last season -- 30 catches and 398 yards in 16 games -- to unfamiliarity with his role on the team.
"Not playing as much, I didn't know how to handle it. People in the media think, 'He's complaining,' but I was learning how to handle something new. It was an adjustment for me."
Fantasy Analysis:
That's first quote presents a way for Housh to get through this season with minimal accountability if things don't go so smoothly. If he has a bounce-back season, he'll be able to say, "I told you so." If he turns in something similar to what he did with the Ravens, he can just pass it off as a bad team fit.
While Houshmandzadeh was a very solid fantasy WR just a few years ago and still thinks he is one of the best in the league, he'll turn 35 this September and is no longer capable of being a No. 1 receiver. Housh will need to settle for another job as a reserve player on a one-year contract because that's all he is worth right now. He is worth even less to fantasy owners.
