Falcons' Tony Gonzalez says Matt Ryan is ready to be elite
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan had a very productive and successful 2010 season. He threw 28 touchdowns and just nine interceptions. Although he's only been in the league for only three years, he set career-highs in quarterback rating and completion percentage -- 91.0 and 62.5, respectively. From a fantasy perspective, he finished just behind the elite crowd of Brees, Rivers, Peyton Manning, etc. Many think he can enter that group this year, and it should be no surprise that teammate Tony Gonzalez agrees.
"He's ready," Gonzalez said of Ryan to Pro Football Weekly. "He's at that point in his career where, like most players, you really don't come into your own as a football player in the NFL until right around year three, four, five. Usually quarterbacks, through history, they usually take three, four years to really hit that peak. Matt, he's at year four, and he's just going to keep getting better.
"He already is a really good player. He went to the Pro Bowl last year, but I'm talking like a Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers -- he's going to be up there with those guys if things go the way I think they can."
Fantasy Analysis:
Michael Turner looks like he's ready to break down, so Ryan may have to put up even bigger numbers this season if the Falcons want to repeat as the No. 1 seed in the NFC. With the addition of first round-pick Julio Jones to go along with Roddy White, Harry Douglas, Michael Jenkins and Gonzalez, Ryan has enough weapons around him to do that. He may very well join that elite tier of fantasy QBs in 2011, and he may be a bit of a steal in fantasy drafts right now. He's currently the 10th quarterback off the board, according to FFToolbox's ADP chart. He's being selected after the likes of Tony Romo and Josh Freeman.
