Update: Bills pick up Tyler Thigpen
Update: Tyler Thigpen and Chan Gailey are back together. A league source tells Pro Football Talk that the Buffalo Bills have signed the former Chief to a three-year contract. Gailey, Buffalo's head coach, was Kansas City's offensive coordinator in 2008 when Thigpen had his best season -- 21 total touchdowns and close to 3,000 yards from scrimmage. The Bills seem committed to Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starter, but Thigpen will provide a definite upgrade over current Bills backup QB, Brian Brohm.
UPDATE: Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel wrote Monday night that Thigpen will be given an opportunity to compete against Fitzpatrick for the Bills' starting QB spot. I fully expect Fitz to claim victory, but that "he's our quarterback" stuff Gailey was spewing about Fitzpatrick back in May doesn't seem as strong now.
Fantasy Analysis:
And if Fitzpatrick gets hurt, Thigpen has shown before that he can do a modest job of holding the fort together. Thigpen, only 27 years old, threw two touchdowns and two interceptions in parts of five games with the Dolphins last season. He completed just 53.2 percent of his passes, but accuracy has never been Thigpen's forte. He makes differences with his legs. He won't be the starter unless Fitzpatrick falls flat on his face in camp, but he's decent insurance. I haven't seen any financial terms disclosed.
