Redskins rookies WR Leonard Hankerson, RB Roy Helu sign
The Washington Redskins have signed two of their more interesting rookies, at least for fantasy owners.
Late Wednesday night, third-round wide receiver Leonard Hankerson agreed to terms on a four-year deal that is reportedly worth $2.72 million. On Thursday, the Redskins signed running back Roy Helu
. He was drafted in the fourth round. Exact financial terms have yet to be disclosed.
Fantasy Analysis:
Hankerson's value has certainly taken a hit in the past couple of days as the Redskins have been racking up receivers. He may not be a starter because of Santana Moss and Anthony Armstrong, but it's very possible that he could beat out the likes of Jabar Gaffney and Donte' Stallworth
to be the third option. The 6-foot-2 Hankerson scored 13 touchdowns in his final season at the University of Miami and became the third Hurricanes wideout to record 800 yards in back-to-back seasons. The other two? Michael Irvin and Andre Johnson.
Helu seems to be a good fit for Mike Shanahan's one-cut, zone-blocking run scheme. Washington beat writers have already compared him to Clinton Portis this offseason. That's a bit much, but Helu compete against Ryan Torain
for the starting gig. And even if he doesn't get it in September, it's just a matter of time before Torain gets hurt yet again.
Both of these guys are sleepers, Helu being more popular than Hankerson because there are fewer obstacles in his path to the starting lineup. Both are worth a late-round flier, and keep tabs on them in training camp.
