Source: Redskins are set on John Beck
The Washington Redskins are expected to be active in free agency, but according to a source close to the team, they won't be looking too hard for a starting quarterback on the market if head coach Mike Shanahan has his way. John Beck is apparently his man. "He is set on Beck," the source told NFL.com's Jason La Canfora "That's his guy. He isn't just saying it for the media or to blow smoke. He's serious as hell about it." Everyone expects Rex Grossman, who is a free agent, to re-sign with Washington. But his role would be as a backup. The 'Skins also need a third quarterback, and La Canfora threw Vince Young's name out there, but there isn't much to that speculation. Beck, a 2007 second-round pick out of BYU, has played in just five games in his career. The last of them came on Dec. 30, 2007 while Beck was with the Miami Dolphins. He has committed eight turnovers next to a single touchdown pass in his career. He has completed 60 of 109 passes with an average of just 5.2 yards per pass. Beck was Miami's No. 3 QB for the 2008 season before being released. He spent the 2009 season on the Ravens' roster and was then traded to Washington in Aug. 2010. He is under contract through the 2012-13 season.
Fantasy Analysis:
If Beck had anything to offer in a starting role, he would have gotten more playing time by now. Heck, if Shanahan is so enamored with him, Beck would have/should have played at the end of last season instead of sitting behind Grossman when Donovan McNabb was benched. It's mighty hard to believe that the Redskins won't go after someone such as Matt Hasselbeck in free agency. In any case, this passing offense is shaping up to be quite a train wreck in 2011.
