Ravens' Le'Ron McClain wants more carries in 2011
In 2008, Baltimore Ravens running back Le'Ron McClain led the team's ground attack with 902 yards and 10 touchdowns on 232 carries.
Since Ray Rice
has gained a more prominent role in the backfield and become one of the NFL's most productive backs since 2009, McClain's own statistical contributions have been limited for the sake of blocking. It's a role that he has excelled in -- he made the Pro Bowl in 2009 thanks in large part to his road-grading skills. But McClain, a free agent, wants things to go back to the way they were.
"I have no problem getting in there blocking and getting dirty because I love contact," McClain told the Baltimore Sun. "No disrespect to anybody, not [Ravens offensive coordinator] Cam [Cameron], not [head coach] John Harbaugh, not Ray Rice or Willis [McGahee]. I just don't want to disrespect my game anymore, like I feel like I've done these last two years."
In the last two years, McClain totaled 74 carries and scored just two touchdowns.
"I had my game put in a box for the past two years because I couldn't show too much," McClain said. "I want to get my chance. Hopefully it's with the Ravens. If not, I'm prepared for the transformation."
Fantasy Analysis:
McGahee is probably going to need to take a pay cut from his scheduled $6 million salary this season to stay in Baltimore. So far, he has not insinuated that he is willing to do so. Thus, the Ravens are likely to cut him when possible and try to re-sign McClain as the complementary big back to Rice. With McGahee out of the picture, McClain would be destined to receive more carries down by the goal line. But he'll probably still be a blocker first between the 20s. He may not get the amount of carries he would like, but it will be an increase. If everything breaks perfectly, McClain's value in TD-only leagues will be rather large. He'll be a fringe play in standard leagues.
