Panthers and Charles Johnson agree to six-year, $72 million deal
The Carolina Panthers moved quickly secure their most coveted unrestricted free agent, defensive end Charles Johnson . The six-year, $72 million contract includes $32 million guaranteed. After coming in to replace the departing Julius Peppers, Johnson shined with 62 total tackles and 11.5 sacks. The Panthers front office even went out to Miami to visit with Johnson in order to ensure that he wouldn't sign anywhere else. "Once you are settled in somewhere, you get comfortable. Money aside, it wasn't a hard decision for me to leave because I am tied into Charlotte." Johnson said, "They showed so much respect for me, I wanted to show it back."
Fantasy Analysis:
Johnson has emerged as a young and highly-talented pass rusher. Last year was his first year starting after spending two seasons stuck on the depth chart behind Peppers. In ADP leagues, Johnson is a solid option but sacks can be a fickle statistic. He could have 20 sacks next year, he might have three. But either way, the Panthers are obviously enamored with the young defensive end and his future looks promising.
