Packers OC Joe Philbin named Dolphins' head coach
Is he the next Don Shula?
That will certainly be a question asked about Joe Philbin in circles of Miami Dolphins fans and reporters over the coming days and weeks. Philbin spent the past five seasons as the Green Bay Packers' offensive coordinator and was named Dolphins head coach Friday. While he didn't call the plays for the Packers, he did craft their offensive game plans.
"We're thrilled to have Joe Philbin join the Dolphins as our head coach," owner Stephen Ross said in a statement. "Joe has all the attributes we were looking for when we started this process. (General manager) Jeff Ireland felt Joe was the right choice to bring the Dolphins back to the success we enjoyed in the past."
Fantasy Analysis:
A couple of months ago, everybody thought the Dolphins would go for a sexy, big-name hire this offseason. But once Jeff Fisher didn't go with them, they set their eye on a pretty darn good coordinator. Philbin overlooked one of the game's best offenses for a handful of years and will try to draw the same success out of Brandon Marshall
, Reggie Bush
and others in Miami. Of course, Aaron Rodgers has a lot to do with the success in Green Bay, and the Dolphins still need to figure out their QB situation. But don't forget that Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn is a free agent this year. He would be an ideal fit.
