WR Mario Manningham signs 2-year deal with 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers are still courting a Manning, but on Saturday night, they did land a Manningham. Former New York Giants wide receiver Mario Manningham
has agreed to a two-year contract with the Niners. Financial terms were not immediately available. Manningham, one of the heroes of Super Bowl XLVI, also caught a touchdown against San Fran in this year's NFC Championship game. Injury and the emergence of Victor Cruz limited his 2011 numbers. Manningham posted just 523 yards on 39 receptions with four touchdowns in 12 games. His best season came in 2010 when he caught 60 balls for 944 yards and nine touchdowns.
Fantasy Analysis:
It's a little smaller deal than I thought Manningham was going to get. Frankly, I thought he was going to get overpaid for one nice catch, but it looks like the Niners got him at a good price. And now with Randy Moss and Manningham in the fold, they are building a nice stock of receivers around Alex Smith ... or maybe some other quarterback who has yet to be signed. However, because of San Fran's offensive approach and the presence of Moss, Crabtree and Vernon Davis, it's hard to imagine Manningham having anything more than solid WR3 value this season. That will be especially true if Smith remains the starter.
