Chiefs HC Romeo Crennel hints at full-blown RB timeshare
It's only March. Free agents are still signing, and we're about a month off from the start offseason programs. A lot -- A LOT! -- can change, but for now, it sure sounds like the Kansas City Chiefs are going to find ways to split carries between Jamaal Charles
, Dexter McCluster
and the newly signed Peyton Hillis
. Head coach Romeo Crennel said Monday that Hillis will be used all over the field and that his role each week will depend on the game plan.
"He's an all-purpose back," Crennel said of Hillis. "He's shown he can do everything. He can catch. He can run. He can block. We'll use him by game plan. He might line up at fullback, he might line up at running back. There might be times where he'll be in the backfield with Jamaal or Dexter McCluster."
Fantasy Analysis:
Charles is coming off an ACL tear, but I haven't heard anything in regards to a slow recovery; I assume he'll be ready to go come week one. But it seems like the Chiefs plan on using Hillis as more than just a short-yardage back. He and McCluster could take a good chunk of valuable touches away from Charles, which would limit the fantasy values of all three involved. This will be one of the top position "battles" to watch during the preseason.
