49ers' Frank Gore says he'll be catching more passes this season
When it comes to pass-catching running backs, Frank Gore has been in a class by himself over the past five seasons. He is the only back to register at least 40 receptions each year since 2006. But Gore recently told SI.com that he thinks new head coach Jim Harbaugh will accentuate that part of his game. "[Harbaugh is] just going to get me catching the ball more and getting me a lot of space," Gore said. "He'll be doing a lot of different things instead of the eight or nine men in the box. He's just trying to get the box loosened up for me."
Fantasy Analysis:
Getting Gore out in space may reduce some of the punishment he takes by charging into those eight- or nine-man fronts. It's injuries, not a lack of yards from scrimmage, that's the real concern with Gore. He's been banged up throughout his career, hasn't played in more than 14 games in a season since 2007 and ended last season on the mend because of a broken hip. Gore proclaimed that his hip feels great and that he doesn't hold back on the field. That's the real news here; a possible uptick in receptions is just icing.
Even though the Niners spent a fourth-round pick on running back Kendall Hunter , he's a change-of-pace runner when compared to Gore, who still owns San Fran's backfield. As such, he should be a first-round pick in all drafts. And yes, feel free to give him a bit of a boost if you're in a PPR league.
