Vikings give $25 million to TE John Carlson

The Minnesota Vikings signed tight end John Carlson to a five-year contract worth $25 million on Wednesday. Carlson spent his first four years in the league with the Seattle Seahawks. After displaying some real long-term promise in his first two seasons, Carlson saw a big statistical decline in 2010 and then had to sit out all of the 2011 season because of a torn labrum in his shoulder.

Fantasy Analysis:

But the Vikings just spent a second-round pick on tight end Kyle Rudolph @KyleRudolph82 11 months ago. So pardon me while I don't understand this move at all. For one thing, the money is way too much, and Rudolph did show some pass-catching ability last year. It wasn't as if Christian Ponder really helped him out much. This feels like a situation that fantasy owners should want to stay far away from. While Ponder may depend upon his two tight ends often, Carlson and Rudolph will likely cannibalize each other's value next season.
