Panthers add RB Mike Tolbert

The Carolina Panthers, owners of a fearsome two-headed running attack in DeAngelo Williams @DeAngeloRB and Jonathan Stewart @Jonathanstewar1, have brought in yet another productive running back. The Panthers signed former Charger Mike Tolbert @miketolbert35 on Monday. The deal struck is for four years. Tolbert, a typical big back but one adept at catching the ball, has scored 21 touchdowns in the past two seasons. In 2011, he ranked third on the Chargers with 54 receptions.

Fantasy Analysis:

Unless this move leads to another in the Panthers' backfield, this signing makes little since to me. DeAngelo Williams just inked a big-money deal a year ago. Jonathan Stewart is entering a contract year, but multiple sources have reported that the Panthers are unlikely to trade him. Those two guys basically do everything that Tolbert does. He may be a better receiver than Stewart, but Stewart is no slouch. And when it comes to goal-line touches, the Panthers have that area covered with Stewart and Cam Newton @CameronNewton. Barring a change to the pecking order, I think Tolbert will be fantasy bench fodder this season.
