Chiefs ink WR Steve Breaston for 5 years
Yet another reunion is about to take place. Wide receiver Steve Breaston has gone from Arizona to Kansas City after the Chiefs got him to agree to a five-year contract Wednesday. The exact worth is unknown but it has been reported that he will receive $9 million guaranteed.
Breaston, who spent his first four NFL seasons in Arizona, will now have Todd Haley as his head coach. Haley served as the Cardinals' offensive coordinator from 2007-2008.
Breaston recorded a 1,000-yard season back in 2008 as the Cardinals' No. 3 receiver behind Larry Fitzgerald
and Anquan Boldin. His number have dipped since then. Last year, he gained 718 yards but also missed three games because of a knee injury that affected him for the large majority of the season. Breaston recently said the knee is "fine."
Fantasy Analysis:
This move puzzles me a bit. Yes, it gives Matt Cassel another nice weapon. But the Chiefs just spent a first-round pick on a wide receiver -- Jonathan Baldwin. I guess they see him only as a red-zone option right now. Breaston is good receiver, but he's nothing special, and that knee injury seems a little mysterious.
I don't think it helps Breaston's value much. While it probably means the Chiefs will throw a little more often, they are still a run-first team with Jamaal Charles at the head and Dwayne Bowe as the No. 1 wideout. In a 12-team league, Breaston a reserve WR.
In Arizona, Fitzgerald still reigns and is not impacted by this move move. Youngster Andre Roberts
stands to benefit the most from Breaston's departure.
