Saints re-sign WR Marques Colston, but lose WR Robert Meachem to Chargers
The New Orleans Saints were able to retain their top wide receiver, Marques Colston
, just before he would have hit the open market. But they couldn't keep Robert Meachem off of the field and ended up losing him to the San Diego Chargers. Colston re-signed with the Saints for five years and $40 million. He got $19 million in guaranteed money. Meanwhile, Meachem signed with the Chargers late Tuesday night for $25.9 million over four years, including $14 million guaranteed.
Fantasy Analysis:
Colston has been Drew Brees
' favorite WR for much of the past six seasons. While he's not spectacular, he is consistent. Colston will turn 29 years old this June and has some injury concerns, but as long as he stays upright with Brees slinging it, Colston is a very safe WR2.
Meachem becomes the Chargers' immediate answer to Vincent Jackson's departure. He's not as good as Jackson -- he hasn't topped 45 catches or 800 yards in any season. But he'll be a valuable piece in the Chargers' downfield passing game. Meachem led the Saints in yards per catch average in each of the past three seasons. He's not a true No. 1 WR, but I think he'll fit in well with VIncent Brown, Antonio Gates and others. I don't think this changes Meachem's value all that much. He's going from a great aerial offense to a pretty darn good one, and I don't think he'll see a steep incline in targets. He's still a WR3 with boom-or-bust value in fantasy. Philip Rivers will certainly miss Jackson, but this signing does help alleviate some of that loss. I think the Chargers still need to add another receiver from somewhere.
