Ravens are also going to cut Derrick Mason, Todd Heap
The lockout has been as dead as the dodo for about five hours now, and the Baltimore Ravens have wasted no time in making significant changes to their roster. Shortly after word got out that Willis McGahee will be released, Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun went on record to say that the franchise's top two pass-catchers of all time -- wide receiver Derrick Mason and tight end Todd Heap
-- will follow him out the door. Mason, 37, caught 14 touchdowns in the past two seasons, but his 802 receiving yards in 2010 were his fewest since 2006, and his 61 receptions were his fewest since 1999. He had been tossing the idea of retirement around for a while; maybe this will push him closer to that conclusion. Heap was a stellar NFL tight end for most of the past decade. But he is 31, and the Ravens apparently seem content with letting 2010 rookie Ed Dickson
become their new pass-catching tight end.
Fantasy Analysis:
Once again, I'll qualify all of this by saying these cuts won't become official until Thursday, and some of these players may be Ravens this season. But still -- wow. Cutting productive teammates since 2005 who are beloved in that city? It's all in the name of business. With this trio and defensive tackle Kelly Gregg on the chopping block, the Ravens will save about $18.6 million. So an interesting first day, post-lockout, for the Ravens may be nothing compared to what they do with all that cash in free agency. Fantasy-wise, Dickson is a low TE2 right now, but with much upside. Anquan Boldin and second-round rookie Torrey Smith
are probably Baltimore's top two wide receivers right now. But there's no doubt the Ravens will be looking to add in that area.
