Update: Panthers acquire TE Greg Olsen from Bears
The Carolina Panthers have made a trade that includes a receiver. But it has nothing to do with Steve Smith . In fact, it's the Panthers who are adding a pass-catcher.
The Panthers have traded for Chicago Bears tight end Greg Olsen
in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick. Olsen, who is entering the last year of his contract, is due just $900,000 in salary this season. But a new contract is expected to be worked out. Under offensive coordinator Mike Martz last season, Olsen was vastly underused as he caught just 41 passes for 404 yards and five touchdowns.
Update: The pick was a 2012 third-round pick, according to the Tribune's Brad Biggs. There is no other compensation. Also, the Panthers have signed Olsen to a four-year contract extension.
Fantasy Analysis:
The Panthers are certainly building a nice offense around Cam Newton . I talked negatively about Steve Smith remaining in Carolina this morning, and this move doesn't change my opinion much; I don't know if Newton can get the ball to him consistently. But Olsen is a different story, I think. He had disappointing numbers in 2010, but I think he is a very interesting fantasy player now. You know Newton will be looking at him as a major safety valve. He'll be a huge target around the end zone. Olsen, 26, may not be drafted as a TE1, and because of that, he's got some pretty nice value.
And as a post-script for Carolina: Jeremy Shockey
, who is also with the Panthers, now has minimal fantasy value now. He's the clear No. 2 tight end here.
The Bears' starting tight end as of right now is Matt Spaeth. No, thanks.
